Vice-minister of justice lectures on people’s mediation to college students

Liu Zhenyu, vice-minister of justice, gave a lecture on the development of the system of people's mediation with Chinese characteristics to over 400 students and teachers at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) on Nov 7.

Starting the lecture with a case study, Liu vividly explained to the audience what people's mediation is and its unique features. 

He stressed that the work of people's mediation is necessary to the building of a social governance structure of co-construction, co-governance and sharing, strengthening of the public legal service system and improvement of the diversified dispute resolution mechanism.

The people's mediation system was authentically "created in China" as it took root in the traditional Chinese culture and has a vast base of people, Liu said.

He pointed out that with the development of China's economy and society, the coverage of the people's mediation has been extended from disputes in such areas as marriage and family and neighborhood relationships to those in areas like medical treatment, road traffic, consumption and finance.

As to how to innovatively advance the development of the work of people's mediation, Liu said the mechanism that connects people's mediation, administration mediation and judicial mediation must be further improved and the application of information technology and artificial intelligence propelled.
