Talks in Hefei tech hub offer window into quantum science

An event hosted by the Grand Union of Innovation, or GUI – a tech hub in Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui province – recently tackled the complex issue of quantum science.

The first session of the GUI Tech Talks on Aug 29 provided a detailed look into the cutting-edge field that promises to revolutionize the world. It aimed to explain what quantum science is and how it works.

The event featured a discussion between Yuan Lanfeng, a science popularization expert and two leading figures in quantum science and technology: Peng Chengzhi, a distinguished chair professor at the University of Science and Technology of China and Lyu Pin, the chairman of China Telecom Quantum Information Technology Group.

Peng Chengzhi explained the origin and concept of quantum science and how it differed from classical physics. He also introduced some of the achievements and challenges of quantum information science.

Lyu Pin shared his experiences of working in quantum technology industrialization – and how quantum secure communications had become a mature and important field for information security.

He also gave some examples of quantum applications in various domains – such as quantum computing, quantum metrology and quantum artificial intelligence.

The speakers also answered questions from the audience, including those pitched by elementary school students and foreign friends. They clarified some common misconceptions and myths about quantum science and demonstrated some quantum products, such as quantum secure phones.

The event aimed to promote the public's understanding and appreciation of quantum science – and to inspire more innovation and collaboration in the field.

The GUI Tech Talks series is one of the science popularization brand activities launched by the tech hub. It's a platform for attracting top-flight resources and creating a favorable ecosystem for science and technology innovation and entrepreneurship.
