Cheng Kai, chairman of the China Disabled Persons' Federation, visited Shanghai's Yangpu district on Dec 3, to inspect community-based disability services and to celebrate the 34th International Day of Persons with Disabilities together with local residents.
Cheng toured the Sunshine Rehabilitation Station in Yinxing subdistrict and the Yangpu Sunshine Community Activity Center, where he met with people with disabilities who were taking part in rehabilitation exercises, skills training and cultural activities.
Cheng encouraged them to expand their social interactions, build inclusive communities and enjoy a better life together.
Cheng stressed the need to fully implement the people-centered urban development philosophy and to accelerate the creation of more accessible and inclusive communities.
He called for more integration of resources and closer coordination with professional institutions to better meet the needs of people with disabilities in health management, rehabilitation, skills development and recreation.
What's more, he urged disabled people's federations to improve their service capacity, work with real commitment and reach people with disabilities at the village and community level — doing everything possible to address their pressing concerns and to provide reliable support for them in daily life.
